J&K Reorganisation Act 2019 

 
• J&K state has been divided into 2 UTs: J&K and Laddakh in August 2019.
 
• Article 370 was scrapped
 
• Act is being legally challenged in SC
 
 
J&K Delimitation Exercise 
 
• Being executed by J&K Delimitation Commission:
        • Headed by former SC judge Ranjana Prakash Desai
        • Ex-officio members are
                1. Election commissioner Sushil Chandra
                2. J&K state election commissioner K.K. Sharma
        • Parliamentarians who are associate members:
                1. Farooq Abdullah (NC)
                2. Hasnain Masoodi (NC)
                3. Akbar Lone (NC)
                4. Jugal Kishore Sharma (BJP)
                5. Jitendra Singh (Union Minister 
        • National Conference (NC) is the associate member of the Commission along with BJP.
 
• The Commission is due to submit its report to Union Home Ministry in March 2022.
 
Purpose of Commission: Redraw Lok Sabha and assembly constituencies, and increasing the number of seats under the J&K Reorganisation Act (2019).
 
 
Reaction to the Delimitation Exercise
 
• All political parties, except BJP, in the region are opposing this exercise. They demand restoration of statehood, Article 370, and normalcy in the region. They also oppose BJP’s claims of development in the region.
