Ch 5 A Roadside Stand (Poem)

Q. What did the people at the roadside stand plead for? Why?

A. The villagers running the roadside stand plead to the passerby from cities to stop for a moment, and buy the goods which are sold at the roadside stands. The villagers are fed up of their pathetic lifestyles and cash crunched stuation. Hence they plead to the city dwellers to buy some of their goods so that the villagers can improve their standards of living.

Q. What do greedy good doers do for the village people? What is the consequence for their help?

A. The “greedy good  doers” i.e. the crooked politicians, who run the government,  meet all promises to the village folk. They assure them of a comfortable lifestyle and cunningly instill a fake sense of relief in the minds of the poor villagers.  This is the only good that they do for the village people. The politicians do so much “good” only to lure the rural population into voting for them. By doing so, the politicians mislead the villagers,  who reduce the effort they put in earning their bread- thinking that their dire financial condition will be taken care of- and thus suffer even more.

Q. Why does the poet describe the desire of the people at the roadside stand as childish?

A. The poet describes the desires of the villagers as childish because just like a child's desire, their desire is also impractical and is incongruent with reality. The villager's dream for a better lifestyle in a mere fantasy as their present condition is pitiable. They hope that the crooked politicians and rich yet self-centered city dwellers might help their financial distress but they are led down. Hence the villagers’ desire goes in vain and is childish.

Q. What step does Robert Frost suggest that would bring relief to him?

A. Robert Frost wants to wipe out the pain of the countryside in one go but knows the pain is a real one and hence solution should be a real one too.  Thus he suggests that the city dwellers notice the plight of the villagers and help alleviate the villagers’ poor condition by buying things from them.  This way, the city residents can share their resources with rural people and enhance their living standards.
