F 2: Mrs Packeltide's Tiger (by Saki)

Q. Why did Mrs. Packeltide wish to kill a tiger?   [N.C.E.R.T.]

A. Mrs. Packeltide wished to kill a tiger because she was jealous of Loona Bimberton's feat of flying 11 miles in an aeroplane. She wanted to steal the limelight from Loona, her social rival, and instead make her jealous.

Q. What was Louisa Mebbins attitude towards money?

A. Louisa Mebbins was very greedy and money minded. She spared no chance where she could squeeze out money from Mrs. Packeltide. She treated anyone's money as if it were her own and gave tips to save it, thus saving people many rubles and francs. She loved money more than anything.

Q. What preparations did the villagers make to arrange for a suitable tiger for Mrs. Packeltide and earn a thousand rupees.

A. The villagers poted their children day and night to make sure that the tiger doesn't run away to fresh hunting grounds. They get cheap goats loose so that the old tiger was never in danger of starvation. He was being fed well like a pig before slaughter. Even the mothers who carried their children home after a long day's work in the fields hushed their singing lest they might curtail the tiger's restful sleep.

Q. RTC

"'The incidental expenses are so heavy'. She confides to her friends."

i) What inquiry did the friends make?

A.i) Mrs. Packeltide's friends inquired as to why had she stopped hunting.

ii) How did Mrs. Packeltide satisfy her friends?

A.ii) Mrs. Packeltide satisfies her friends by telling them that the incidental expenses she incurred were very high.

iii) What incidental expenses did Mrs. Packeltide incur?

A.iii) Mrs. Packeltide had to spend a thousand rupees to kill the tiger and another six hundred and eighty to keep her secret that the tiger actually died of heart failure.

Q. What made Mrs. Packletide decide to give a party in Loona Bimberton's honour? What did she intend to give Loona on her birthday?   [N.C.E.R.T.]

A. Mrs. Packletide wanted to outshine her social rival Loona Bimberton by killing a tiger which was an achievement at par with, if not greater  than, flying in an aeroplane. Thus she planned to give a lunch-party at her house in Curzon Street in Loona Bimberton's honour, but with a tiger skin rug being the main attraction of that party instead of Loona's feat of flying in a plane. Adding insult to injury, Mrs. Packletide also planned to gift Loona Bimberton a tiger claw brooch.

Q. Who was Miss Mebin? Was she really devoted to Mrs. Packletide? How did she behave during the tiger shooting?   [N.C.E.R.T.]

A. Miss Mebin was the "paid" companion of Mrs. Packletide during the tiger hunt. Although she accompanied Mrs. Packletide, her true devotion lied with money and not Mrs. Packletide. Even during the tiger shooting, Miss Mebin had a protective elder sister attitude towards money. For instance, she remarked that Mrs. Packletide ought to have got the tiger at a cheaper price since the animal was too old to be worth a thousand rupees. When the tiger appeared on the scene, she hurriedly advised Mrs. Packletide to shoot the tiger before it harmed the goat because then they wouldn't have the pay for the bait, which was an extra.
