Story Writing - What Is It With Rudra?
What
Is It With Rudra?

Rudra
was awfully quiet that Monday morning. Usually he is the one who
talks nonstop. Mrs. Arora, the maths teacher always calls him a
“Talking Machine”. No one liked his calmness on that day. When
Mrs. Arora asked him if he was alright, he sat there with tears
rolling down his eyes.
“What
happened Rudra? Why are you crying?” asked the concerned teacher.
But Rudra kept on sobbing. The teacher asked again- “For heaven’s
sake Rudra stop crying and tell me what’s the matter. I’m your
teacher Rudra, let me help you.” But the child seemed to take no
notice of her.
One of
his friends Shubh shouted with the intention to ease the tension of
the class-“He must have had a break up.”. The class started
giggling.
“Oh!
Shut up Shubh!” retaliated Mrs. Arora.
Silence
took control of the class. Rudra won’t stop crying. Finally,
Rudra’s best pal Arjun, broke the ice. “It’s his maths marks
ma’am.” he said.
“But
he never regrets his marks then why this time. He has even failed
once but his effulgent smile has never left his face.” the teacher
asked.
“Well
it’s not exactly the marks ma’am. They are his personal best till
now. Instead it is what good marks were going to get him.” replied
Arjun.
“Oh!
don’t beat around the bush Arjun and tell me clearly what is it
with Rudra?” asked the teacher who grew more anxious.
“His
parents had promised to take him to his favourite band’s concert.
It’s a British band coming to India for the first time and Arjun
does not want to miss it. He loves the band more than anything. The
only condition was that he had to get at least 70 marks in maths but
he scored only 55 which is a record in itself as I told you.” said
Arjun.
Mrs.
Arora was a very sympathetic and understanding teacher. She could
not bear the sight of any of her students crying. Especially not
Arjun. It did not suit his personality. He was the one who brought
laughter on the faces of people with tears but this time it was the
other way round. After making quite an effort, she somehow restored
Rudra’s smile. She even convinced his parents to take him to the
concert.
But this
effort consumed her whole period but it was worth it.
As soon
as she left, Rudra started jumping with happiness. He was not crying
because of his marks or the fact that his parents were not taking him
to the concert (although this fact did disappoint him). It was all
just a plan to waste the time of their teacher. The whole class was
involved in the plan as none of them wanted to study that day.
But that
did not mean that they did not respect their teacher. The whole class
knew that Mrs. Arora would just laugh sweetly when she would get to
know about the truth. Rudra was now very grateful to his teacher. He
thanked her in his heart. He wasted class time and made his dream
come true (which was not the real intention though). He had hit
two targets with the same arrow.
